Preparing Parents for the Period Talk

Immersive Learning Object: Preparing Parents for the Period Talk

Goal and Objectives

The goal of the lesson is to expand the learner’s prior knowledge about menstruation by giving proper education about the fact, myths and hygiene. By taking the lesson, the learners will also be able to know why, when, what and how to teach their adolescent girls about menstruation. The lesson will help the learners to be positive and open-minded about the fact of menstruation.

Authoring Tool

The lesson will be delivered in a VR authoring tool called “Google Tour Creator“. Google launched this new tool for teachers and their students called Tour Creator, which allows anyone to create their own VR tour using imagery from Google’s Street View or their own 360-degree photos. This new app is designed to work with Google Cardboard and Google’s existing VR “field trips” app Expeditions. The idea of this app is to let students and teachers themselves build their own VR experiences and stories without needing technical knowledge.

Audience

The audiences for the instructional lesson are the parents of all adolescent daughters who are approaching to their womanhood. Parents particularly of any age range are applicable for this lesson. Parents – includes mother, father, or any legal guardian who has a girl child of age 8-13 under their authority. The audience will come from different backgrounds including variety of ethnicities, social economic class, sexual orientation, gender, and educational backgrounds. Many parents struggle with how and when to discuss these issues with their kids, and some parents feel hesitant to talk to their daughters openly about it, and keep waiting until they see those signs of puberty. Many parents may also have misinformation about periods, which in turn prevents girls from obtaining knowledge and developing skills to keep themselves healthy. Therefore, it is important to keep an open-mindedness among the learners to understand the fact about menstruation, disprove the old taboos and give girls a thorough, wholesome understanding of menstruation freely.
